“Krishna’s blessings on this land,” a passerby whispered as we walked past a construction site. We are standing here before ISKCON Botswana, a beacon of Hindu faith and culture right here in Gaborone. ISKCON Botswana’s story begins over a decade ago, a testament to the growing presence of Hinduism in this part of Africa. For years, the joyous festival of Krishna Jayanthi was celebrated at a devotee’s house, Mr. Daleep’s, But the dream was bigger. The community longed for a dedicated space, a spiritual home. Then, a few years ago, the government of Botswana answered their prayers by allocating land for a temple. Interestingly, this coincided with the construction of the Balaji Temple nearby. Witnessing the impressive work, ISKCON Botswana engaged the same skilled team led by Sthapathi Shri. Valasingam, to build their own sacred space. The ISKCON Botswana temple is a beautiful blend of traditional and modern architecture. Imagine ten pillars inside, each depicting the Dasa avatars of Lord Venkateshwara, a testament to the interconnectedness of Hindu deities. The main deities, Krishna and Balarama, initially residing at Mr. Daleep’s home, found their permanent abode in this temple. The journey wasn’t easy. Financial limitations caused delays, but the community rallied together. Through donations, fundraising events like Food Festivals, and sheer determination, the temple started to take shape. Today, ISKCON Botswana stands as a symbol of devotion, resilience, and the universal appeal of faith.
