Have you ever noticed the intricate details of the Seal Statue in New York City? This isn’t just any statue. It’s a symbolic representation of the city’s rich and complex history. The Seal of the City of New York, or “Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci” in Latin, can be found everywhere, from schoolhouses and libraries to police shields. The Seal Statue captures the essence of this emblem. The current Seal design, standardized in 1915 and officially dated 1625 in 1977, tells a story of New York’s evolution. At the heart of the Seal Statue, you’ll see a shield displaying a windmill’s sails, two beavers, and two flour barrels. These elements represent the foundations of New York’s early economy. Beavers, prized for their pelts and used as currency, fueled the success of New Amsterdam under Dutch rule. Later, flour became the economic driver, symbolized by the flour barrels. The windmill represents the milling process and also pays homage to the Dutch heritage. The figures of a sailor and a Native American flank the shield on the Seal Statue. These figures, added in 1686, stand on a laurel branch, signifying peace. The sailor, holding a lead plummet, acknowledges the importance of shipping to New York’s growth. The Native American, a Lenni Lenape man, represents the island’s original inhabitants. Above, a bald eagle, replacing the ducal coronet after the American War for Independence, symbolizes victory and a new era. A ribbon bearing the Latin words “Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci” encircles the lower part of the Seal Statue. The entire seal is framed by a laurel wreath, further emphasizing the theme of victory and peace. The Seal Statue is more than just a depiction of a city’s emblem. It’s a tangible link to New York City’s past, a reminder of the diverse elements that shaped its identity.
