The Mönchmühle’s water wheel silently speaks of centuries past. Can you hear its whisper?

Before you stands the Mönchmühle a historic watermill in Mühlenbeck. Founded around 1230 by Cistercian monks this remarkable mill is one of Brandenburg’s oldest. The monks built a massive dam nearly 100 meters long and 20 meters wide. They moved an incredible 15000 cubic meters of earth. Their goal was a four-meter waterfall. This provided enough water power for consistent operation. For its time it was an extraordinary feat of engineering.

The mill building was cleverly constructed directly against the dam. The dam forms part of the mill’s foundation. This foundation remains largely unchanged to this day. The Mönchmühle operated continuously until 1973. Afterward neglect and vandalism threatened its existence. Now it’s a protected monument.

Since 2003 a dedicated association the Förderverein Historische Mönchmühle has worked tirelessly. Their mission is the restoration and preservation of this iconic landmark. They envision it becoming a vibrant cultural center for the community.

A new water wheel was installed in December 2011. Officially put into operation on April 7 2012 this wheel generates environmentally friendly electricity. A remarkable testament to the Mönchmühle’s enduring spirit.

In November 2012 the RBB’s “96 Stunden” initiative focused on the Mönchmühle. In just five days the historic dance hall was renovated. This was possible thanks to generous donations from various construction companies and individuals. Many local residents and the association itself also participated.

The Mönchmühle’s story isn’t just about grinding grain. It’s about community perseverance and the remarkable transformation of a historic treasure. Today the Mönchmühle welcomes visitors. It offers a unique glimpse into the past and a celebration of its renewed life. The Mönchmühle a testament to the enduring power of history and community.
