Is it possible to imagine a church born from a desire for spiritual reform? That is the story of GKPI. The Christian Protestant Church in Indonesia. Right here in Batam.

The church lacked local and international connections. However GKPI overcame its isolation. Membership increased. In 1977 GKPI joined the Lutheran World Federation and the United Evangelical Mission.

Over 75 percent of members are small farmers. They live in villages and rural areas. Others work for the government or military. Some are shopkeepers or becak drivers. Most members have low incomes. They possess few skills to improve their living conditions.

GKPI has three departments. These are witness general organization and finance. These departments oversee evangelization. They handle training and education. They also manage Sunday school research youth women and men programs. GKPI also supports foundations. These include those for the blind general education the Mamre Orphanage and the Agape Foundation.

The congregations provide financial support. They are responsible for their pastor’s salary. The United Evangelical Mission also supports some programs. GKPI favors the partnership promoted by the UE. It helps churches understand each other’s conditions. They learn about needs and challenges. Churches learn how to implement Jesus Christ’s mission in the world. This partnership enables churches to carry out their ministry.

The training of pastors is a priority. Elders and church leaders also receive training. The aim is to develop their knowledge skills and leadership abilities. GKPI also wants to deepen their spiritual life and dedication. The church has encouraged pastors to pursue post-graduate studies. GKPI is planning a cooperative budgeting system. This will focus on local fundraising and financial self-reliance.
