Right here before you stands the site of this spectacular event. The Seoul International Fireworks Festival. For years this spot has been transformed into a breathtaking canvas of light and color. It’s a dazzling display of pyrotechnics unmatched anywhere in Korea.
This annual spectacle began in 2000. It’s become a beloved tradition. However the festival wasn’t held every year. It was cancelled in 2001 2006 and 2009. Imagine the disappointment. Each year international teams participate. In 2013 Canada Japan France and South Korea collaborated. Each team’s participation costs about 200 million won. Including expenses Hanwha spends over 1.5 billion won on the Seoul International Fireworks Festival.
The main event hall in front of the 63 Building is the best viewing spot. It gets extremely crowded though. You’ll hear the soundtracks perfectly. Other excellent locations include Ichon Hangang Park at the northern end of the Hangang River. Nodeul Island near the central Hangang Bridge offers another beautiful perspective. These spots are great for photos. They’re less crowded. You won’t hear the soundtracks clearly from these alternate viewpoints.
Getting here can be tricky. The closest subway station Yeouinaru Station gets incredibly busy. It’s recommended to get off at Yeouido Station Saetgang Station or Daebang Station and walk. If you’re heading to Ichon Hangang Park use Yongsan Station Sinyongsan Station or Ichon Station.
The Seoul International Fireworks Festival has faced criticism. It’s funded by a private institution Hanwha. This differs from other festivals funded publicly. The festival causes traffic jams and leaves behind a lot of trash. Some people want the festival moved or even cancelled. Despite this it remains a tremendously popular event.
