Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Houston’s Fifth Ward stands the First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, a testament to faith, resilience, and community. The story of First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church begins not here, but in Shreveport, Louisiana. The year was 1890, and a devastating flood displaced countless residents, leaving them without homes or jobs. Among them were the founders of what would become this historic church. Led by Reverend Judge P. Parker, this small group of believers sought refuge and a new beginning in Houston. For three years, they held services in private homes, their faith unwavering despite their challenging circumstances. They eventually found a temporary home in the Colored Odd Fellows Hall on McMillan Street. Known then as “The Louisiana Church,” they carried with them the spirit of their former home. In 1898, the congregation acquired land on Providence Street. They constructed a simple brush arbor, marking the first physical manifestation of their church. This evolved into a stone structure in the early 1900s. The church continued to grow, expanding its educational facilities in 1947. The City of Houston’s acquisition of their Providence Street property in 1953 led to another pivotal moment. The congregation moved to its present location on Lyons Avenue. The new sanctuary, completed in 1955, was designed by John Saunders Chase Jr., Texas’s first licensed African American architect. This marked the official renaming of the church to First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Beyond its architectural significance, First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church has been home to remarkable individuals. Louise Ozelle Martin, the church’s official photographer, documented Houston’s Black community. She also established a photography school, nurturing future generations of artists. Catherine Adams, another influential member, is honored with a city park named after her, a testament to her tireless community work. In 1985, the church established the B. H. Roberts Institute to honor a pastor who dedicated 35 years of service to the community. First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church stands today as a beacon of hope and resilience in a diverse and evolving neighborhood. It continues its legacy of service, echoing the faith and determination of those who first sought refuge and community in the heart of Houston’s Fifth Ward.
