Established in 1972 Fernhill School boasts a rich history. Initially a primary school run by the Sisters of Notre Dame since 1953 it faced closure in 1971. A dedicated committee of parents fought to keep it open. Their efforts led to the opening of the current school in August 1972. Only four staff members were initially employed. The parents’ committee formed the Board of Governors. Sister Gabriel of the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny served as the first headmistress. At this time Fernhill School was still a primary school. A secondary department was added in 1973.

Fernhill School sits on nine acres of wooded grounds overlooking Glasgow. Its location is on the Cathkin Braes. The school’s initial enrollment comprised approximately 20 nursery students 120 primary students and 110 secondary students. In 2013 plans were announced to make the secondary department co-educational. In 2014 Fernhill School faced financial difficulties. A front-page article in The Herald highlighted these problems. However parents and governors secured funding to keep the school open while refinancing took place.

Fernhill School’s fees once placed it among the twenty most expensive schools in Scotland. This led to a decline in student numbers. The school then took a significant step in 2014. It froze its fees to attract middle-class families. This resulted in a dramatic increase in enrollment projections. The school aimed to preserve its single-sex status in the senior school despite considering admitting boys to boost numbers. The school believes that single-sex education provides a secure and happy environment for its girls. Fernhill School’s story is one of resilience adaptation and commitment to providing quality education. Its success underscores the importance of community support and innovative approaches to financial challenges. The school continues to thrive proving itself a valued institution in the Glasgow community.
