In 1943, amidst the turmoil of World War II, a unique landmark emerged in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg. This was the Long-Range Artillery Fire Control Point Number 204, more commonly known as Rubezh Izhora. The Dolgovremennaya Ognevaya Tochka (DOT) 204, or Rubezh “Izhora,” as it’s often called, stands as a silent witness to the city’s resilience. Initially, construction began in 1940 based on project number 117.I. However, the war interrupted the plans. The Rubezh Izhora wasn’t completed until 1943, during the Siege of Leningrad. It played a crucial role in protecting the city. The DOT 204 became an essential part of the defense system, providing artillery support and helping to repel enemy attacks. The Rubezh “Izhora” wasn’t just a single structure. It was a complex of fortified positions. These positions stretched for about 20 kilometers from Uglovaya Gavan to Srednyaya Rogatka and Kupchino. These fortified positions, also known as DOTs, played a vital role in defending Leningrad. They were strategically positioned to provide overlapping fields of fire. This ensured complete coverage along the city’s perimeter. Approximately 100 such fortified structures were erected during the war. Interestingly, the name “Rubezh” stuck to this particular location due to its historical context. This context links it to the 55th Army’s activities in the area. The Rubezh Izhora became a museum in 2014. It offers a glimpse into the past. It exhibits original artifacts and provides insights into the lives and battles of those stationed there. The museum’s location on the outskirts of Saint Petersburg offers a unique perspective. It is removed from the usual tourist trails. This allows visitors to connect with the city’s history in a more profound way. The Rubezh Izhora is more than just a museum. It’s a living testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the people of Leningrad during the war. In 2021, the museum expanded. It added 11.25 hectares to its existing area. The expansion included the incorporation of several nearby locations. These locations were vital during the war. They contain numerous relics, including trenches, bunkers, and artillery positions. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the city’s defense system. The Rubezh Izhora DOT 204 in Saint Petersburg stands as a powerful reminder of the city’s strength and endurance.
