“A hidden gem,” a local whispered, leading me toward Pınarbaşı Cami. “Few outsiders know its story.” The Pınarbaşı Cami stands as a quiet testament to a rich history. It’s not just a place of worship, but a landmark intertwined with the flow of life in Bursa. Commissioned by İzzeddin Bey, brother of the famed commander of the Niğbolu fortress, Doğan Bey, Pınarbaşı Cami’s origins are shrouded in the mists of time. Although the exact construction date remains a mystery, scholars place it sometime in the 14th century. The mosque earned its name, “Pınarbaşı,” meaning “head of the spring,” from its proximity to the first distribution point of the Pınarbaşı water, sourced from the Uludağ. Imagine the community gathering here, drawing not only spiritual sustenance but also the life-giving waters essential for their daily existence. Originally built with a wooden roof, the rectangular Pınarbaşı Cami has seen its share of transformations over the centuries. Its original wooden minaret, weakened by time, was replaced in 1960. The new minaret, built of brick and topped with a lead-covered dome, draws inspiration from the minaret of Sultan Murad I’s mosque. Adjacent to the Pınarbaşı Cami, a water reservoir marks the original distribution point for the Pınarbaşı spring. Encased in iron bars in 1885 and later covered with sheet metal during the Republican era, the reservoir was beautifully restored in 2006 by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. The Pınarbaşı Cami, a place of worship and a vital part of the city’s infrastructure, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Bursa.
