Once, Memorial Drive Lutheran Church stood as a beacon now it shines as Christ the King, West Campus. Today we explore its story. This isn’t just about a building. It’s about faith and community.

Memorial Drive Lutheran Church’s story began with dedication. In 1959, the church was established. By 1960, it officially joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. For years, Memorial Drive Lutheran Church served its community. It was a place for worship and spiritual growth.

Then came a significant change. On March 13, 2022, Memorial Drive Lutheran Church became Christ the King, West Campus. This marked a unique collaboration. Two congregations joined forces. They became one church with two campuses. The sanctuary was full. The singing raised the roof. Charter members witnessed the handoff. The two councils rededicated the church.

The congregational records were transferred. Memorial Drive Lutheran Church was declared closed. But the spirit of the MDLC members lived on. They continued as members of Christ the King Lutheran Church. The legacy of Memorial Drive Lutheran Church didn’t end. It transformed.

Many remember the Cenacle. It was a place for retreats and spiritual direction. After Hurricane Harvey, the Cenacle Sisters moved to Memorial Drive Lutheran Church. When the Cenacle houses closed, the Emmaus Spirituality Center continued the work. Even the stations of light are on the trees in the back lot. They came from the Cenacle.

Christ the King’s West Campus now houses other communities. UMOJA Lutheran Swahili Mission is here. The Aihua Chinese Class meets here too. The Memorial Drive Community Garden also finds its home here.

Leaders guided Memorial Drive Lutheran Church through this transition. Interim Pastor Beth Marie Halvorsen gently shepherded the congregation. Former CTK Pastor Duane Larson helped CTK discern this new outreach. CTK Interim Pastor Amandus Derr continued the work.

The collaboration brought new energy. It created a new vision in the Bunker Hill area. Today Christ the King Church offers many opportunities. People can participate in music, service, education, and fellowship.

Memorial Drive Lutheran Church embraced redevelopment. It committed to a three-year journey. The goal was to align its mission with God’s calling. The church valued its members. They empowered each other in their lives of faith. They preached a God of grace. This God claims them for radical hospitality. They showed courageous risk, unbounded creativity, and abundant generosity.

Consider the transformation of Memorial Drive Lutheran Church. It embodies faith, community, and renewal. It’s a story of change and continuity. It is a reminder that faith evolves. The spirit of Memorial Drive Lutheran Church lives on. It lives on in the hearts of its members and the community it serves.
