Did you know that Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish has been serving the San Diego community for over a century? The story of this parish is deeply intertwined with faith, community, and service. It all started in 1910. The Vincentian Fathers took charge. They named the parish after their patron saint. That was St. Vincent de Paul.
In its early years, the original site transformed. It had three houses. They became a rectory and a church. In 1922, Augustinian priests were assigned to the parish. Then in 1925, diocesan priests were permanently assigned to St. Vincent de Paul Church.
Monsignor Patrick Dunne recognized a need in 1948. He planned for a parish school. Construction finished in two years. The Dominican Sisters of Tacoma staffed the school. Enrollment increased and two classrooms were added in 1959.
The Dominican Sisters transferred in 1969. Monsignor Peter Mimnagh invited Mercy Sisters from Ireland to staff the school. The school continued to grow. Another new classroom was built in 1983. Over the next twenty years instructional programs were added. In 1988 an extended care program was offered. A computer lab was added in 2003. A multi-purpose room was added too.
From 2005 to 2010, Msgr. Dennis Clark renovated the church. He gave it its current look. The old rectory was torn down. The current Preschool was built in 2010. This allowed the addition of a science lab. A new library was also built above the preschool.
Since 2010, updates have renewed the facilities at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish. A new electrical system was installed. Carpeting has been replaced. Lock-down shades were installed. A rechargeable cart with computers was purchased. Security cameras were installed in 2019.
In 2016, Father John Dolan agreed to accept the Historic Jones House. It was to be restored. The house would become the new rectory.
Today, Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish continues its mission. It advances the Good News of Salvation in Jesus. The parish is a vibrant community. It is filled with the Holy Spirit. They are eager to share God’s love.
Father Alex de Paulis arrived in 2017. Deacon Kevin Helfers joined in 2021. They lead the community in missionary discipleship. Parishioners engage in various ministries. These include Kingdom Builders. They also have St. Vincent’s Mission Outreach.
Masses at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish are held on Saturday and Sunday. Weekday Masses are also available. Other services include Adoration and Confessions.
St. Vincent de Paul himself was born in France in 1581. He was known for his work with the poor. He founded the Congregation of the Mission. He also founded the Daughters of Charity. His feast day is September 27th.
