A legacy of football and industry. That’s the story of Parc Gustave-et-Léonard Hentsch. Before us lies not just a park but a layered history.

Parc Gustave-et-Léonard Hentsch sits between Geneva’s central station and the airport. This 3.8-hectare green space wasn’t always a park. It was once home to the Piccard car factory. The Pic Pic brand thrived here from 1906 to 1924. Then came Tavaro. This factory produced the legendary Elna sewing machines from 1934 to 1995. These industrial giants left their mark on the land.

Football also played a significant role. FC Servette’s stadium Les Charmilles stood here. The Hentsch family a prominent banking family in Geneva had a long connection to the site. They owned the land even before the stadium around 1920. In 2003 they acquired the adjacent Tavaro site. The new Geneva football stadium opened in 2003. This event paved the way for the park’s creation. The Hentsch family donated the land in exchange for building rights.

The park’s design is the result of two competitions. The winning 2005 design was rejected due to high maintenance costs. A second competition was held five years later. Hüsler & Associés’ design was chosen. It features a central lawn area. This is playfully called Clin d’Oeil a nod to the old football pitch. The park’s design cleverly incorporates noise barriers. These shield it from the nearby Avenue de Châtelaine and railway line. The surrounding buildings including a new residential complex and a renovated factory building help to create a quiet oasis.

The Espace-Hippomène a former Elna factory building stands in the park’s heart. It’s been transformed into a cultural and event center. Part of it is now used by Geneva’s University of Art and Design. The park offers a range of recreational activities. There’s a playground water terraces and walking paths.

The playground is a marvel of design. It covers 1500 square meters and boasts three levels. It features balancing climbing and swinging elements for different age groups. Even senior citizens from nearby homes enjoy it.

The water terraces are another highlight. Five sandblasted concrete surfaces are animated by water games. On hot days 50 water nozzles offer cool refreshment.

The planting is also meticulously planned. Trees such as pines birches maples and cherry trees provide shade and seasonal beauty. The park’s pathways and squares are made of local sandblasted concrete.

Parc Gustave-et-Léonard Hentsch is more than just a green space. It’s a testament to Geneva’s industrial past its love for football and the generosity of the Hentsch family. This unique park offers a tranquil escape. It is a place to relax play and reflect on the layers of history beneath our feet.
