Deep within Kyoto, nestled between Imadegawa and Horikawa streets, lies the enigmatic Saimei Shrine. Do you feel a tingle of anticipation? This isn’t just another shrine. Saimei Shrine pulsates with a unique energy, a legacy woven from the mystical arts of a Heian Period legend. Saimei Shrine honors Abe no Seimei, a revered astronomer, cosmologist, and astrologer who served the emperor and the influential Fujiwara family. His wisdom extended beyond the stars, encompassing divination and special prayers. This made him an indispensable figure in the imperial court. Abe no Seimei’s life was remarkably long and healthy for his time, further adding to his mystique. He lived well into his 80s, a testament to his connection with unseen forces. The shrine stands on the very ground where his residence once stood, built by Emperor Ichijo just two years after Seimei’s death in 1007. It’s believed that the emperor hoped Seimei’s protective influence would continue even after his passing. Saimei Shrine is adorned with the ubiquitous pentagram, a symbol deeply connected to Seimei. It represents the five Chinese elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water – and their interconnectedness in Eastern philosophy. Saimei Shrine even holds a secret, a well whose water is said to possess special qualities. The renowned tea master, Sen no Rikyu, even used this water for his celebrated tea ceremonies. Although the current shrine buildings date back only to the 1920s, the spirit of Abe no Seimei is palpable. His legacy resonates in Japanese culture, inspiring novels, films, and even manga, attracting a constant flow of visitors to Saimei Shrine. Today, he is remembered as a kind of Japanese Merlin or a Heian Period Harry Potter.
