A 0.90m high brass sculpture stands before you. It’s the Kedroos kai Philoxenios Ermis. Few notice this artwork in the middle of Aeolou Street.

This sculpture is a modern addition to Athens. It was created in 1993 by Alekos Fasianos. It depicts Hermes the god of commerce and hospitality. The sculpture was a donation. It came from the Association for the Upgrading of the Commercial Centre of Athens. It was finally placed in 1994. Its location almost in the middle of a busy street makes it easy to miss. The sculptor’s name is inscribed on the back.

Kyriakos Krokos initially designed the metal pole. The pole was meant to be wrapped in brass floral decoration. That design was never implemented. The simple pole now supports the rather unassuming sculpture.

Imagine the bustle of Aeolou Street. People rush past oblivious to this small piece of art. The Kedroos kai Philoxenios Ermis stands as a quiet observer. It’s a testament to the blend of ancient and modern in Athens. It’s a subtle symbol of commerce and hospitality in a city that thrives on both.

This unassuming sculpture has a story to tell. It speaks of donations and artistic visions. The Kedroos kai Philoxenios Ermis is more than meets the eye. It’s a small but significant part of Athens’ cultural landscape. Take a moment to appreciate its understated elegance. Its quiet presence reminds us to look closely. It shows us that beauty can be found even in the most unexpected places.
