Drum Bridge. That’s another name for \u53e4\u5824\u6a4b. This arched bridge has captured hearts for centuries. We are standing before a bridge steeped in history and spiritual significance.

\u53e4\u5824\u6a4b is not just a crossing. It is an experience. Its reflection creates a drum-like shape in the water below. The name Taikobashi which means drum bridge comes from this shape.

Popular belief says that crossing \u53e4\u5824\u6a4b brings spiritual purification. The bridge’s form may come from rainbows. Rainbows connect earth and heaven in Shinto mythology. Izanagi and Izanami created Japan by stirring the sea. They stood on a floating rainbow bridge. Izanagi is the father of Sumiyoshi Taisha’s deities. They came into being when he purified himself in the sea.

Records show a bridge here since the thirteenth century. The current \u53e4\u5824\u6a4b dates back to around 1600. Yododono donated funds for its construction. She sought favor for her son Toyotomi Hideyori. He was at war with Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Shipwrights built the first arched bridge. They have played a key role in its maintenance. The bridge has been rebuilt and repaired many times. Steps were added in 1955. Before that, gaps between wooden slats were the only footholds.

Today’s \u53e4\u5824\u6a4b has a steel frame and cypress-wood boards. It stretches 21 meters long and stands 5 meters tall. The bridge is 6 meters wide. Its steepest point has a slope of over 40 degrees. Metalwork on the railings dates back to the Edo period.

Kawabata Yasunari made \u53e4\u5824\u6a4b famous in his short story “Sorihashi”. The story tells of a man recalling a childhood secret revealed on the bridge. Descending the bridge shattered his illusions. This was more frightening than climbing it.
