Along the Balsemão River lies Penude. A small village nestled in the Douro region. Its history stretches back centuries. Penude’s origins are ancient. Evidence suggests settlements existed long before the parish was formed. Remnants of castrejas buildings and dolmen monuments remain. A stone with Roman inscriptions stands as a testament to the past. The name Penude appears in medieval texts as Punidi or Punide.

The parish of Sao Pedro de Penude initially belonged to the crown. Later it became property of the Marquis of Marialva. King Sancho I intervened in a dispute over patronage rights. He determined that only the king and the archdeacon of Lamego had legitimate claims. In 1258 Estevão Domingues served as prelate of Sao Pedro de Punidi. During the 16th century Penude’s patronage shifted. It changed hands between various patrons and even the Infante D. Fernando. After his death Penude returned to the Crown’s possession. By the 16th century Penude was merely a village in Lamego. The village itself and Sao Pedro were distinct settlements.

Penude’s location on the river’s edge and proximity to Lamego were key to its development. The western protection of a high-altitude elevation further aided its growth. Today Penude thrives with its own unique charm and identity. The agricultural heart of Penude beats strong. Potatoes and chestnuts are prominent crops. The area also boasts granite processing industries. Local crafts like lace and patchwork blankets are sold to tourists and residents. The aroma of roasted lamb or kid is ubiquitous. So is the delectable fumeiro cured meats. And the sweet treat of bolo podre is always a popular snack. The annual Sao Pedro festival in June is a key attraction. It adds to the vibrant cultural scene in Penude. So is the Nossa Senhora do Rosario festival in August. Penude is a place steeped in history. It is a place of nature and of community. It is a place where the past and the present beautifully intertwine. This is the essence of Penude. A place you should never forget.
