Welcome to the Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. Established in 2016 this remarkable area covers 632357 square kilometers. It’s the second biosphere reserve in Baden-Württemberg following the Swabian Alb. The area is nestled in the Southern Black Forest. Its headquarters are located in Schônau im Schwarzwald.

The idea for biosphere reserves in Baden-Württemberg sprouted in 1991. Michael Succow and Markus Rösler envisioned these protected areas. Rösler’s dissertation between 1992 and 1996 laid the groundwork for the Swabian Alb biosphere reserve. Interestingly he included a list of potential German sites. The Southern Black Forest was already on that list. The political decision to create a biosphere reserve in Baden-Württemberg was made in 2005. The Swabian Alb was selected first. The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald was planned alongside the creation of the Northern Black Forest National Park in 2014.

The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald encompasses 29 municipalities. Some are fully within its bounds others partially. The area includes Freiburg im Breisgau. The original plan included Feldberg Steinen and Todtmoos. These municipalities ultimately declined participation.

The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald is not just a scenic wonder. It is a model region showcasing the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. It actively promotes sustainable practices and regional economic development. The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald has a diverse range of recreational activities. It is easily accessible by public transport. The annual Culinary Hinterwälder Weeks support the preservation of the typical Hinterwälder cattle breed. Over 20 local restaurants participate in this initiative.

For those who are environmentally conscious the Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald provides opportunities. There is a one-year voluntary environmental service. Students can do mandatory internships. They gain insights into all areas of the biosphere reserve administration. There are programs for children and young people too. The Junior Ranger program encourages nature exploration.

The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald’s office sees itself as a development agency. It informs coordinates and promotes activities and projects. This is all aligned with the guidelines of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald demonstrates a commitment to preserving biodiversity. It showcases cultural landscapes and promotes sustainable development. This commitment to both nature and people makes this place truly unique. Enjoy the wonder of the Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald.
