Who was Saint Alena, and why does a small chapel in Brussels bear her name? The Sint-Alenakapel, nestled in Forest, a municipality of Brussels, whispers a tale of faith, martyrdom, and miracles. Sint-Alenakapel commemorates Alena, a young woman who lived near Brussels in the 7th century. Born to noble pagan parents in Dilbeek, Alena secretly converted to Christianity. She risked everything to attend Mass, a dangerous act at a time when Christianity was not widely accepted. When her father discovered her secret, he sent guards to retrieve her. In the ensuing struggle, Alena lost an arm and later died from her injuries in prison. However, Alena’s story doesn’t end there. Miracles began to occur at her burial site. One involved Duke Omundus, one of her father’s subjects, who regained his sight after praying to Alena. An angel even appeared, carrying Alena’s severed arm to the chapel where she worshipped. These events led to the conversion of Alena’s parents, showcasing the power of her unwavering faith. Sint-Alenakapel became her shrine in Forest. This followed the enshrinement of Alena’s remains in the Priory of Forest in 1193. The Bishop of Cambrai granted this permission, effectively canonizing her. Sint-Alenakapel, once a simple chapel, became a popular pilgrimage site. Relics and a cenotaph dedicated to Saint Alena found a home within the parish church of Forest. Although later analysis has raised questions about the authenticity of the relics, the story of Saint Alena and her devotion continue to inspire. The Sint-Alenakapel stands as a testament to her faith and sacrifice. Remember her story when you visit this quiet corner of Brussels.
