Step back in time. Picture Houston’s First Baptist Church in 1841. Sixteen men and women a small but determined group gathered to establish this church. They faced challenges. Wars raged. Yellow fever epidemics struck. The 1900 Galveston hurricane destroyed an early building. Yet Houston’s First Baptist Church endured. It’s a testament to faith and resilience.

This wasn’t just a building. It was a cornerstone of the community. A refuge in times of trouble. A place of solace. A place of hope. Houston’s First Baptist Church grew. Its membership flourished. Great pastoral leadership guided its path. Evangelism religious education and missions fueled its expansion.

But by the late 1960s challenges arose. Downtown Houston was changing. Membership declined. Yet a core group remained faithful. They persevered. They believed in the power of their faith. Dr John R Bisagno became pastor in 1970. His vision and enthusiasm revitalized the church. The congregation experienced phenomenal growth. It became clear that a move was necessary.

In April 1977 Houston’s First Baptist Church found a new home at the corner of I-10 and the 610 West Loop. Growth continued. Members traveled the globe sharing the gospel. They engaged in mission work. They helped churches in need. The church’s commitment to outreach was unwavering.

After 30 years Dr Bisagno retired. Associate Pastor Dr David Self provided leadership during the transition. The church continued to thrive. A pastor search committee carefully chose Dr Gregg Matte. He became pastor in 2004. He brought new energy and vision.

But Houston’s First Baptist Church is more than just a place of worship. In 1982 the church built a Christian Life Center now known as the Fitness and Recreation Center. It’s a testament to the church’s desire to serve the community. The FRC serves church members and the wider community. It offers fitness programs and recreational activities. The center exemplifies the church’s holistic approach to ministry.

Today Houston’s First Baptist Church stands as a symbol of faith. It represents perseverance. It shows the power of community. Its story is one of overcoming adversity. It demonstrates unwavering commitment to faith and service. It’s more than a church. It’s a legacy. It’s a vibrant part of the Houston tapestry. It’s a story of unwavering hope. And it’s still being written.
