In 1953 a prominent journalist and historian Sheikh Hamad Al Jassir established Al Yamamah magazine. This weekly Arabic magazine is published in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. It was initially a monthly publication boasting 42 pages. Its first title was Al Riyadh. It was later renamed Al Yamamah. The magazine’s early years were eventful. It faced censorship challenges. It also witnessed courageous acts of dissent. For instance Abdul Rahman Al Shamrani a former military officer anonymously published articles criticizing corruption within the Saudi royal family. This brave act highlights the magazine’s role in public discourse.

Al Yamamah’s printing history is equally fascinating. Its first two issues were printed in Egypt. Subsequent issues were printed in Makkah Jeddah and Beirut. A pivotal moment arrived in May 1955. The ninth issue was printed in Riyadh. This marked a significant milestone. It signified the localization of journalism in Riyadh Province. Even before this al-Jasser published a four-page tabloid. This was the first newspaper in Riyadh Province. It was published on April 19 1955.

The magazine faced challenges. Its publication ceased after the double tenth and eleventh issues in 1955. The weekly newspaper Al Yamamah then replaced the magazine. Hamad al-Jasser served as its director for seven years. He ran it from its headquarters on al-Marqab Street in Riyadh. The publishing rights were later transferred. Zaid Bin Abdulaziz Bin Fayadh continued publishing until 1964. After a journalistic law was implemented in 1964 publication resumed. Al Jasser returned as founder. A new numbering system started from issue 1. Mohammad al-Sheddi later took over as editor-in-chief. Al Yamamah transitioned from a newspaper into a magazine in 1968. It continues publication to this day.

Al Yamamah magazine achieved impressive circulation. In 1994 it sold 35000 copies. The magazine covers many topics. It provides information on Arab issues. It also addresses contemporary concerns. Its history is a testament to the evolution of media in Saudi Arabia. It also showcases the courage of journalists who dared to challenge authority. Al Yamamah magazine stands as a symbol of resilience and enduring impact. It continues its legacy as a crucial voice in Saudi Arabia. Its long history reflects the changing landscape of the Kingdom. It also shows the evolving role of media.
