Spanning the Shazikou waterway, the Beidou Bridge connects the Shazikou Town of Panyu District and the Liukou Town of Nansha District. This impressive structure, a key artery in Guangzhou’s transportation network, isn’t just a bridge, it’s a story waiting to be told. The Beidou Bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It represents a connection between communities and a vital link in Guangzhou’s bustling economy. Officially opened on January 10, 2001, the Beidou Bridge stretches 3.25 kilometers, including the approach roads. It boasts a six-lane design, initially intended to have 12 toll lanes, with tolls planned to be collected from 2001 to 2024. However, the tolls were abolished on January 1, 2017, making the bridge free for all to use. The northern end of the Beidou Bridge begins near Shazikou Town’s Shazikou village, connecting with the city’s Liang Road and Provincial Highway 362. It then crosses the Shazikou waterway. The southern end of the bridge terminates at Beidouwei in Liukou Town, joining with Xinghai Avenue and Liuling Road. Its construction, a feat of engineering, began in December 1998. The main structure was completed by the end of 2000, costing a total of 174.39 million yuan. This makes the Beidou Bridge the second special large bridge across the Shazikou waterway. In July 2021, disaster struck. A cargo ship collided with a pier of the Beidou Bridge, causing significant damage and forcing its immediate closure. The bridge underwent extensive repairs and was finally reopened to traffic on January 19, 2022, restoring this vital connection for the people of Guangzhou. The Beidou Bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It is a vital artery in the city’s transportation network, facilitating trade and connecting communities. Its story is a reminder of the importance of infrastructure and the challenges of maintaining it.
