Khlong Ban Ko, or “Island Village,” was once almost completely embraced by the Chao Phraya River. It beckons us to imagine a time when the river flowed a different path, a path shaped by the ambitions of kings and the flow of trade. Long ago, during the Ayutthaya period, rulers grew impatient with the Chao Phraya’s meandering course. Time was money, especially for merchants eager to reach the capital Ayutthaya. So, kings devised a plan. They carved new channels, “Khlong Lats”, slicing through the landscape to shorten the river’s journey. Khlong Ban Ko witnessed the dramatic transformation as one by one, these canals altered the river’s flow. The currents, like impatient travelers themselves, embraced the shortcuts, widening them into the main channel we know today.
