Over 310000 pieces Wow Imagine that. Welcome to the National Museum of Korea a treasure trove of Korean history and art. Established in 1945 this museum has witnessed the ebb and flow of Korean history. Its collection boasts artifacts from the Paleolithic era to the early 20th century.

The museum’s journey is itself a story. It began humbly its collection forming from the remnants of the Imperial Household Museum. The Korean War nearly destroyed its 20000 pieces. They were miraculously moved to Busan for safety. After the war the museum shifted locations multiple times. It found temporary homes at Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung Palace. It later resided in a former Japanese government building. This was controversial but it was home until 1995. The museum finally opened in its current Yongsan Family Park location in 2005.

This impressive building isn’t just a repository of artifacts. It’s a marvel of engineering designed to withstand earthquakes. The display cases protect the treasures with shock absorbent platforms. Sunlight illuminates many of the exhibits. A special climate control system keeps the air just right. Fire resistant materials enhance safety.
