Did the Kaiser actually ride a horse? I mean, we’re standing here at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Reiterstandbild, looking at this imposing equestrian statue. It certainly makes him look like a seasoned rider. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Reiterstandbild in Dortmund, specifically near Hohensyburg, is a truly massive monument. It was unveiled in 1902, showcasing Kaiser Wilhelm I astride his horse in front of a towering 34-meter-high structure. Originally, statues of Bismarck, Moltke, and Princes Friedrich Wilhelm and Friedrich Karl stood alongside Wilhelm. But in 1935, under the guise of disrepair, the Nazis redesigned the monument, removing the Princes and adding their own symbols. These were later removed, but interestingly, the original details about Wilhelm’s life, which had also been removed, weren’t reinstated during the 1990s restoration. This Kaiser-Wilhelm-Reiterstandbild is actually one of the few remaining equestrian statues of the Kaiser. Sixty-five were created, but a staggering fifty have been destroyed, most during World War II. One was even sold to a private collector! It’s remarkable that this Kaiser-Wilhelm-Reiterstandbild still stands, a testament to a complex history. The statue serves as a lasting reminder, not just of the Kaiser himself, but of the evolving political landscape of Germany and the enduring power of monuments to both reflect and shape our understanding of the past.
