Upon Yuexiu Hill’s slopes a rich history unfolds. This isn’t just any hill. Yuexiu Hill in Guangzhou is a treasure chest of stories. It once marked the northern edge of Guangzhou’s ancient walled city. Though the walls are gone the hill remains. It stands proudly in Yuexiu Park. This park is one of Guangzhou’s most famous tourist attractions.
Yuexiu Hill’s name itself is a clue. It means “Mountain of Southern Display” or “Mountain of the Southern King”. Its Cantonese name Yut Sau Shan is equally evocative. The hill’s prominence gave it significance throughout history.
Ascend the hill and you’ll encounter Guangzhou’s iconic Five Rams Sculpture. Built in 1960 from over 130 granite pieces it’s a city emblem. Legend says five rams brought prosperity to Guangzhou. These rams taught the people to grow rice ending famine. The rams are symbols of good fortune for the local people.
Near the Five Rams stands the Zhenhai Tower also known as Chen Hoi Lau. This five-storied pagoda is 28 meters high. It’s housed the Guangzhou Museum since 1928. The tower has a fascinating history. It was originally built in 1380 as a guard tower. A Ming dynasty marquis built it to change the mountain’s feng shui. He aimed to stop a prophecy about a new emperor. The tower’s been rebuilt five times. It features prominently in Chinese poetry and art.
At the base of Yuexiu Hill is Yuexiu Stadium. Mayor Ye Jianying had the old Yut Sau Shan Park Playground renovated. The result was the stadium opened in 1950. It’s a significant venue. It hosted events for the 2010 Asian Games. It is a huge venue holding up to 35000 people. It’s used for concerts and various meetings.
Finally there’s the Pavilion of Regaining. This square pavilion was erected in 1948. It stands where a 1928 memorial to the Xinhai Revolution once stood. The original pavilion was destroyed during World War II fighting. The Pavilion of Regaining is a testament to resilience and remembrance.
