Gazing upon Die verlorene Form, one might wonder about its journey. This two-meter-long, two-ton bronze sculpture by Henry Moore reclines here, in Freiburg, at the old synagogue plaza. Its installation in 1961 sparked controversy. Freiburg residents voiced their displeasure through letters to the “Badische Zeitung” newspaper and the university. The state acquired Die verlorene Form, a recast of a 1953 design, as art in architecture for the university’s new college building. One nickname given to the sculpture was the “Emmental Venus.” Die verlorene Form’s international recognition is evident in its exhibitions with the Henry Moore Foundation. It has journeyed twice to Perry Green, England, Moore’s former home. For these trips across the English Channel, the sculpture is insured for 1.5 million euros. This is a significant increase from its original purchase price of 30,000 Deutschmarks.
