Gazing at the Willis Avenue Bridge, you might not realize its pivotal role in connecting Manhattan and the Bronx. This isn’t just steel and concrete. It’s a vital artery pumping life into New York City.

The Willis Avenue Bridge stands as a testament to the city’s constant evolution. The bridge carries northbound traffic over the Harlem River. It connects First Avenue in Manhattan with Willis Avenue in the Bronx. The New York City Department of Transportation maintains the bridge.

Originally opened in 1901, the Willis Avenue Bridge addressed growing traffic demands. The southern Bronx saw increased manufacturing. The Third Avenue Bridge couldn’t handle it alone. In 1894, the State Legislature approved a new bridge. It was built where a 17th-century ferry once operated. After resolving a dispute with the New Haven Railroad, the Willis Avenue Bridge finally opened. It cost $2,444,511.

Did you know trolleys once rolled across the Willis Avenue Bridge? In 1916, the Union Railway Company added trolley tracks. This strengthened the bridge.

By the early 2000s, the Willis Avenue Bridge showed its age. Weather and constant use took their toll. New York City decided to replace it. The Department of Transportation chose to construct a new bridge south of the existing one. The project cost $612 million.

Here’s a fun fact. The new Willis Avenue Bridge was assembled in Coeymans, New York. It traveled 135 nautical miles to New York Harbor on barges. This journey passed under 14 bridges. The bridge is 350 feet long and weighs 2,400 tons.

Imagine the sight of a floating bridge. Onlookers were amazed as it traveled up the Hudson and East Rivers.

Motor traffic shifted to the new Willis Avenue Bridge on October 2, 2010. The old bridge’s walkway remained open for pedestrians and cyclists for a short time.

Runners know the Willis Avenue Bridge well. It marks the 20-mile point of the New York City Marathon. They cross from Manhattan into the Bronx. Some runners call it “the wall” because it’s so challenging. After a short loop through the Bronx, runners return to Manhattan via the Madison Avenue Bridge.

The Willis Avenue Bridge is part of a larger network. The Third Avenue Bridge carries southbound traffic. Together, they form a one-way pair across the Harlem River.

A symbolic portion of the original Willis Avenue Bridge remains. It serves as a monument in Harlem River Park. This preserves a piece of the city’s history.

The Willis Avenue Bridge continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of a growing city. This vital link ensures the smooth flow of traffic between Manhattan and the Bronx.
