Established in 1899 by Reverend Santiago Muza Primera Iglesia Bautista Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its early years were humble. The congregation first met in a modest two-story home in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in Austin. This wasn’t just any gathering it was the genesis of a powerful movement.

In 1910 Primera Iglesia Bautista made history. It hosted the first Mexican Baptist Convention of Texas. This event marked a significant turning point for Hispanic Baptists across the state. They were establishing their own distinct voice within the broader Baptist community. The convention focused on missions evangelism and education. It continues to this day as the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas.

The church’s commitment to education was remarkable. In 1912 it moved to East Avenue and Third Street establishing a Mexican Baptist School. By 1920 a quarter of Austin’s Mexican school children attended. The school’s success was such that the state board of education and the Austin Independent School District contributed to teachers’ salaries. This highlights the vital role Primera Iglesia Bautista played in its community. It wasn’t just a place of worship it was a center of learning and support.

Later the church was led by Anglo-American Pastor Paul C Bell. He was actively involved in ministering to the Hispanic community in Central Texas. He also founded the Mexican Baptist Institute a theological school in Bastrop that operated until 1941. The beautiful mosaic work above the front door is a lasting tribute to Reverend Carlos Paredes a pastor who served Primera Iglesia Bautista for over 27 years. His artistic contribution is a tangible link to the church’s rich history.

Today Primera Iglesia Bautista Church stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community. It continues to serve as a spiritual home and a center of learning. The legacy of those who first gathered in that small two-story home continues to inspire generations. It’s a story of faith perseverance and community. It’s a story written into the very fabric of this church. A story worthy of reflection and remembrance.
