What if these rose gardens could talk? Right here, nestled among French rose gardens and ancient lime trees, stands the baroque Schloss Bollschweil. It exudes a picturesque charm. Schloss Bollschweil’s story began long ago.

The Schnewlin family was already living in Bollschweil in the 13th century. In 1472, Hans Schnewlin-Bernlapp von Bollschweil received the estate as a fief from Duke Sigmund of Austria. This original moated castle was destroyed during the Peasants’ War.

At the end of the 18th century, Schloss Bollschweil was built. It was erected on the site of the former medieval moated castle. Remnants of the moat can still be seen today.

In 1837, Baron Franz Xavier died in Freiburg. He was the last representative of the Breisgau Schnewlins. Before his death, he returned all fiefs to the state of Baden. Schloss Bollschweil and its estate then went to the Baden Minister of State, Baron Wilhelm Ludwig Leopold Reinhard Berstett, as a fief.

Berstett’s granddaughter Amélie married Adolf von Holzing in 1864. He was the Grand Ducal Chief Master of the Horse. The family then took the double name Holzing-Berstett.

After World War I, Amélie’s son, General Max Reinhard Freiherr von Holzing-Berstett, moved his residence to Schloss Bollschweil. The castle had been restored. Marie-Luise Kaschnitz spent her youth in Bollschweil. She was the daughter of the “Rider General”. She created a literary monument to her home in her “Description of a Village”.

In 1952, Peter von Holzing-Berstett built another commercial building. It was on the northern periphery. Today, the castle is still inhabited by the owner’s family. It has been owned by the von Holzing family.

Schloss Bollschweil is a horseshoe-shaped castle. It is surrounded by a wall. It has a French flair. Access to the remise is through a vine-covered archway. The remise of Schloss Bollschweil offers a special setting for festivities.

The remise provides an atmospheric backdrop. It’s perfect for birthdays and weddings. It’s also great for anniversaries and other celebrations. The BoGart trade fair takes place here. It focuses on country house style and garden culture. There is also a BoGart Christmas market.

Gardens can be visited by appointment. Marie Luise Kaschnitz, a writer and poet, also lived here. She dedicated a literary declaration of love to her home village in her book. After her death in 1974, Marie Luise Kaschnitz was buried in Bollschweil. Schloss Bollschweil was her parents’ house. The garden can be visited by appointment.

Please remember that Schloss Bollschweil is privately owned. It cannot be viewed from the inside without prior arrangement. However, its beauty is evident even from here. It is a testament to the rich history of Bollschweil.
