Have you ever wondered about the secrets whispered within ancient stones? The Pfarrkirche Anif in Salzburg holds centuries of stories. This landmark church stands proudly on a hill in the town center. It’s surrounded by a peaceful cemetery a testament to the lives it has touched.
The Pfarrkirche Anif isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. Records show a church existed here as early as 788 to 799. Bishop Arno’s inventory mentions a church ‘ad anua’. It’s believed Bishop Virgil built a small stone or wooden church before him. This early church was dedicated to Saint Oswald a significant figure whose story resonates through the centuries.
The Abbey of St Peter and the Archbishopric of Salzburg went their separate ways in 987. The Abbey received the churches of Grödig and Anif. For many years they shared a priest. Anif became the ‘matrix ecclesia’ or mother parish in 1191. It wasn’t until 1883 that Anif officially became a parish. Count Arco-Stepperg generously endowed it with land. Today Anif and Niederalm share a priest.
The Pfarrkirche Anif’s architecture tells its own tale. The polygonal choir likely dates back to the late Gothic period. Its walls boast stunning frescoes painted in 1900 by Josef Gold. He used a Nazarene style a blend of religious devotion and artistic skill. The left fresco shows Saint Oswald’s first act of kingship. The right fresco depicts him as a benefactor of the poor.
Gold’s artistry extends beyond the choir. He painted the ceiling frescoes around 1887 to 1896. The crucifixion scene dominates the space. The church’s interior has seen many changes. Renovations in 1969 and 1996-1999 updated the space. Yet many original items remain. The high altar from 1840 features a striking painting of Saint Oswald. The church also houses a 1756 monstrance. A beautifully crafted piece it boasts colorful stones and intricate details. The tower too has a story. While initially thought late Romanesque it’s now believed to be late Gothic. Records show Magister Johannes Murator started its construction in 1442.
