Have you noticed that tall structure that is a clock and an art display? That is the Expo-Uhr. It is more than just a timepiece. The Expo-Uhr is a symbol of Hanover’s history and its vibrant cultural scene.

The Expo-Uhr stands in Kröpcke. Kröpcke is Hanover’s central square. It is at the crossroads of several important streets. The square got its name from Wilhelm Kröpcke. He ran Cafè Kröpcke. The city officially named the square Kröpcke in 1947.

Let’s step back in time to understand the origins of this iconic landmark. The first clock on this spot was a meteorological column. It was erected in 1885. This column stood in front of Cafè Robby. Sadly, an air raid in 1943 damaged it during World War II. But, the clock was repaired after the war in 1945.

In 1954, the meteorological column was removed. A contemporary clock replaced it the following year. But, Hanoverians missed the old column. In 1977, the city installed a replica of the original meteorological column. That is the Expo-Uhr we see today. The then Mayor Herbert Schmalstieg unveiled it. This new version had a clock. Instead of weather instruments, it featured a display case. This case was for art exhibitions and presentations.

The Expo-Uhr is not just a pretty face. It has a deeper purpose. In 1995, artist Joy Lohmann had an idea. She wanted to use the clock as a cultural hub. Her goal was to fight rising vandalism. The clock was built by the community, for the community. Lohmann saw its potential to bring people together.

Since 2005, the Kulturraum Region Hannover association has managed the Expo-Uhr. They organize exhibitions and art events. A variety of artists contribute to these events. The Expo-Uhr has become a platform for creativity and expression.

In 2015, the city celebrated the 130th anniversary of the original weather pillar. The Hannover Region Cultural Area Association organized a grand “birthday celebration”. This event highlighted the Expo-Uhr’s history and its importance to the community.

The Stadtbahn station is also located at Kröpcke. It is the main station in the Hanover Stadtbahn network. The station was built from 1968 to 1974. It opened in stages during the 1970s and 1980s. At the time, it was one of Hanover’s largest construction sites. It extends more than 30 meters underground.

Today, all but two Stadtbahn lines stop at Kröpcke station. It is the main interchange point for the network. The station has six platforms. These platforms are on three lines. The lines cross each other in independent tunnels. The Kröpcke station was modernized before Expo 2000. The modernization included hiding the 1970s tilework behind large murals.

So, as you stand before the Expo-Uhr, remember its story. Remember the weather column, the air raid, and the artist’s vision. Consider the Expo-Uhr a meeting point, a symbol, and a vibrant part of Hanover’s identity.
