Born in Windischholzhausen near Erfurt Fritz Müller’s life was anything but ordinary. This unassuming stone commemorates a giant in the world of science. Dr Fritz Müller a world-renowned naturalist. He was born on March 31 1822. His mother was the daughter of Erfurt pharmacist Johann Trommsdorff. A significant figure in the scientific community. His work significantly impacted the acceptance of Darwin’s theory of evolution.

After completing his education in Germany Müller emigrated to Brazil in 1852. He was disillusioned with the Prussian Revolution of 1848. He sought a new life in Blumenau Santa Catarina. He became a farmer doctor teacher and most importantly a biologist. His life’s work revolved around the natural history of the subtropical Atlantic forest. This included meticulous study of the Itajaí River valley.

Müller held an official teaching position. He spent a decade teaching mathematics at a college in Desterro. That’s now Florianópolis. The Jesuits took over the college. Müller continued his research in the Itajaí River valley. He collaborated with the provincial government. He conducted botanical research and advised farmers. In 1876 he became a Travelling Naturalist for the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

Müller’s contributions to science are remarkable. He published over 70 papers in English Portuguese and German. His research covered entomology marine biology and botany. He is best known for his discovery and description of Müllerian mimicry. This phenomenon describes the resemblance between unpalatable species. This protects them from predators that learn to avoid them. This was a significant contribution to evolutionary biology. It strengthened the evidence supporting Darwin’s theory of natural selection.

Müller also discovered Müllerian bodies in the Cecropia genus. These are food bodies utilized by Azteca ants inhabiting the trees. Müller’s botanical work was inspired by Darwin’s publications. He corresponded extensively with Darwin. He sent observations on orchids and climbing plants. Darwin incorporated some of Müller’s work into his publications.

Müller’s unwavering support for Darwin’s theories was noteworthy. His book Für Darwin (For Darwin) published in 1864 provided crucial evidence. Darwin called Müller “the prince of observers”. He received honorary doctorates and memberships in numerous societies. His legacy lives on through the Museu de Ecologia Fritz Müller in Blumenau.
