“Dare to enter a church unlike any other?” I ask, gesturing towards the Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa. This isn’t just a church it’s a testament to faith, death, and art intertwined. San Bernardino alle Ossa stands as a unique landmark in Milan.

Its history stretches back centuries. Initially, the land held a cemetery and a hospital. Space became limited. In 1210, a chamber was built to house bones. This marked the humble beginning of the ossuary. A church was added in 1269.

Centuries passed. The church evolved. Giovanni Andrea Biffi renovated it in the 1600s. He incorporated human remains into the ossuary’s walls in a macabre yet artistic way. Skulls and tibiae were arranged thoughtfully. This reflected religious veneration and meditation on mortality.

However, disaster struck in 1712. Fire consumed much of the church. Reconstruction was essential. Carlo Giuseppe Merlo, a renowned architect, was entrusted with the task. He expanded the church. The new design embraced Baroque style. It featured a central plan and monumental facade. By 1776, the facade was complete, giving San Bernardino alle Ossa its present appearance.

Step inside. The interior has an octagonal plan. Notice the Baroque decorations. Chapels hold paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. But the ossuary is the main draw.

Pass through a narrow corridor. You’ll enter a square room. Look up. The vault is frescoed. Sebastiano Ricci painted the “Triumph of Souls in a Flight of Angels” in 1695. In the pendentives, find the Virgin Mary, Saint Ambrose, Saint Sebastian, and Saint Bernardino of Siena.

Turn your gaze to the walls. They are covered almost entirely with skulls and bones. These remains come from the old ossuary. They also come from cemeteries closed in 1652. Bones adorn niches, cornices, pillars, and doors. The macabre blends with Rococo grace.

Above the altar stands a statue. It depicts Our Lady of Sorrows. She wears a white robe and a black cloak embroidered with gold. Gerolamo Cattaneo created this in the mid-17th century.

Many believe the bones belonged to Christian martyrs. But they were patients from Brolo Hospital. They were also members of aristocratic families.

King John V of Portugal was deeply moved by this chapel in 1738. He had an exact replica built in Évora near Lisbon. It is now known as the Capela dos Ossos.

San Bernardino alle Ossa offers a powerful experience. It is a place for contemplation. The church reminds us of life’s fragility. It also celebrates the soul’s triumph over death. This unique chapel stands as a testament to Milan’s rich history. It intertwines faith, art, and the human experience in a profound way. Take a moment to reflect on the stories these bones could tell.
