Gazing skyward at One Park Plaza, have you ever wondered about its shimmering facade? One Park Plaza isn’t just another skyscraper piercing the Los Angeles skyline. It’s a testament to architectural innovation, a story etched in glass and steel. Completed in 1971, One Park Plaza stands as the brainchild of architect Anthony J. Lumsden, then director of design for the renowned firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall (DMJM). This building marked Lumsden’s first major solo project, a bold statement that showcased his groundbreaking glass skin system. Developed in collaboration with Cesar Pelli, this innovative system employed a non-loadbearing glass membrane. Reversed mullions, a unique feature of the design, freed the structure from the conventional constraints of a vertical “box” design. This not only resulted in a visually striking exterior but also offered significant cost savings. At One Park Plaza, this system facilitated the creation of those distinctive protruding corners. These add visual interest to the skyscraper’s silhouette and offer unique perspectives from within. The 22-story tower, clad in bronze-tinted glass, exudes a delicate elegance, belying its massive size. The thin aluminum reverse mullions accentuate the glass, creating a play of light and shadow. One Park Plaza wasn’t conceived in isolation. It was designed alongside a four-story loft building and parking garage. These structures were envisioned as integral parts of a larger plaza landscape. This aimed to introduce pedestrian-friendly spaces into the bustling urban environment. The roof of the loft/garage building contributes to this landscape, offering a view of fountains and greenery, a welcome respite from the concrete jungle below. One Park Plaza stands as a symbol of architectural ingenuity and urban planning, a testament to Lumsden’s vision and a striking addition to the Los Angeles cityscape.
