Imagine the chilling winds of the 1940s. They whip around this very spot where the Ostarbeiterlager Stele stands. This stele is a solemn reminder of a dark chapter in Freiburg’s history.

Here, on Habsburgerstraße, once Adolf-Hitler-Straße, stood a grim collection of barbed wire and misery. This was the Ostarbeiterlager. It was a prison for those forced to work for the Nazi regime.

The Ostarbeiterlager Stele marks a place of immense suffering. It commemorates the forced laborers from Eastern Europe. They were brought to Freiburg against their will. They were exploited under inhumane conditions.

These “Eastern Workers” or Ostarbeiter as they were called faced prejudice. They also faced terrible living conditions. Unlike “Western Workers” who sometimes lived in hotels, Ostarbeiter were confined. They were held in guarded camps like this one.

Imagine rows of cramped barracks. Think of meager rations and back-breaking labor. This was daily life for the Ostarbeiter. This camp was a Gemeinschaftslager. It was a joint camp for several Freiburg companies. The Kromer company managed this large camp encircled by barbed wire. Hunger and cold were constant companions. Hygiene was almost nonexistent.

Each day, these men and women marched under guard. They went to factories and workshops across Freiburg. They filled labor shortages caused by the war. They worked for companies like Rhodia and Daimler-Benz. They also worked for the city itself.

The Ostarbeiterlager Stele serves as a stark reminder of their plight. It is a memorial to their stolen lives. Anna Djatschenko was one of these forced laborers. At just 18, she was brought from Ukraine to work for the Reichsbahn. She lived in the Ostarbeiterlager. She recalls sleeping on flea-ridden straw mattresses. She remembers a daily bread ration the size of a matchbox.

The local population was not always sympathetic. Anna Djatschenko remembers people demanding they be quiet on the way to work. Some even threatened to throw hot water on them.

The Ostarbeiterlager Stele stands near the former factory of Mez AG. This area held Werk 2. The stele is a testament to the suffering endured within those boundaries. It is important to remember that over 6,500 forced laborers toiled in Freiburg. Some estimates suggest the number was far greater.

Freiburg has taken steps to acknowledge this past. The city established a research center. It documented the experiences of Zwangsarbeiter or forced laborers. Freiburg also created a compensation fund. It was for surviving forced laborers.

The Ostarbeiterlager Stele reminds us of the importance of remembrance. It urges us to confront the uncomfortable truths of history. It calls on us to honor the dignity of all people. It reminds us to stand against injustice.

Let this stele be a constant reminder. May it prompt reflection and action. May it inspire a commitment to a more just and compassionate world.
