Did you know the Church of the Nazarene in Los Angeles boasts a history stretching back to 1895? This isn’t just any church. It’s where a movement began a legacy of faith. The Church of the Nazarene’s story is one of passion vision and a unique approach to holiness.
Initially founded by Phineas F Bresee a former Methodist pastor and Dr JP Widney an educator and physician the Church of the Nazarene emerged from a desire for a deeper focus on holiness. They sought to spread scriptural holiness not just preach it but live it. Bresee and Widney aimed to serve the poor of Los Angeles. Their vision was to spread a message of radical transformation through the Holy Spirit. The early church services were known for their fervor and emotional outpourings. This intensity even caused a rift within the fledgling church. Dr Widney a wealthy philanthropist parted ways with the Church of the Nazarene in 1898 due to disagreements over its practices and his unappreciated financial contributions.
Despite this setback the Church of the Nazarene flourished. Its first building nicknamed the Glory Barn stood on the site of the present-day Ronald Reagan State Building. The church grew rapidly within a decade dozens of churches across the US joined under the Nazarene banner. The movement expanded internationally particularly in Africa Asia and Latin America. The Church of the Nazarene has actively participated in various compassionate ministries and social justice initiatives.
In 1907 a crucial merger solidified the Church of the Nazarene’s identity. Further mergers in 1908 officially formed the denomination we know today. Interestingly although it was initially associated with the Pentecostal movement the Church of the Nazarene later distanced itself from the practice of speaking in tongues. They opted for a different emphasis on holiness and a distinct identity.
