Sogyeok-dong is a dong. That means it’s a neighborhood of Jongno District in Seoul. It is administered under Samcheong-dong.
The name Sogyeok-dong comes from Sogyeokseo. Sogyeokseo was a government office. It existed during the Joseon dynasty. Its job was to perform Taoist rites. Neo-Confucian scholars wanted to abolish it. After the Imjin War, it was abolished. Yet, the neighborhood’s name remains.
Imagine the ceremonies that once took place here. People worshiping the stars. People honoring the earth. They sought to ward off bad omens. The National Taoist Temple stood here for this reason. King Taejo built it in 1396.
Sadly, the temple is gone now. It disappeared after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. However, you can still find traces of it. Look for the signboard. It marks where the temple once stood. Find it near the Samcheong Police Branch.
Sogyeok-dong has transformed over time. It now blends the old and the new. You will find museums here. There are also many art galleries. Trendy cafes dot the streets. Good eateries tempt visitors. Tourists and locals alike flock here. They enjoy the mix of culture and charm.

Notably, the singer-songwriter Seo Taiji was born here. In 2014, he released a song called “Sogyeokdong”. He collaborated with IU, another famous singer. Two versions of the song came out. One featured Seo’s vocals. The other featured IU’s. Both versions achieved success.
