Have you ever seen a water carrier so full of life? The Rau-Brunnen stands before you a testament to Freiburg’s history. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a story in bronze a narrative sculpted in 1909.

Commissioned by Kommerzienrat Rau it was a gift to the city. A celebration of his 25th anniversary as a city council chairman. Imagine the scene on December 6 1911. The unveiling of this beautiful creation. The townspeople gathering to witness the event. A proud moment for Mr Rau. A treasured addition for Freiburg.

The Rau-Brunnen is more than just a pretty face. It’s a work of art. Look closely. The sculptor Ludwig Kubanek. His design reflects an old-German style. A young woman carries two water buckets on a yoke. Four lively children surround her each holding flowers or fruit.

The fountain’s central figure is a young woman. Her relaxed pose is remarkable. Notice how Kubanek captured her strength and grace. She is the heart of the Rau-Brunnen.

This octagonal basin is one of the largest in Freiburg’s old town. This explains its prominence on the Kartoffelmarkt. This is where the lively markets used to be. Years ago it hosted many vendors. They sold crafts textiles and alternative fashions. This was especially so in the 1970s. They were nicknamed the Kartoffelmarkt-Händler. They have since relocated but their legacy lives on.

The Rau-Brunnen continues to be a focal point of the Kartoffelmarkt. It is a beautiful reminder of Freiburg’s rich past. This charming feature adds to the beauty of this historic square. The fountain invites you to pause and appreciate its beauty. The bronze figures continue to serve their purpose. Their subtle elegance is unmistakable.

So take a moment. Admire the craftsmanship. Let the Rau-Brunnen transport you back in time. Let the water’s gentle flow remind you of Freiburg’s enduring spirit. It is a place of beauty a treasure for the people. And a story waiting to be discovered.
