Doesn’t the name Espadanedo sound like something out of a fairytale? Espadanedo is a place with a history as rich as the Douro Valley’s wines. It is nestled in the municipality of Cinfães.
Espadanedo’s story stretches back centuries. Once, it was part of the vast municipality of Sanfins da Beira. That municipality had its court houses in Piães and its pillory in Nespereira. Before the liberal reforms of the 19th century, Espadanedo was also part of the Couto de Tarouquela. Here, it answered to civil justice.
The name “Espadanedo” itself is fascinating. It appears in five locations across Portugal. “Espadana” was a herb with long, pointed leaves. These leaves were used in festivities. They were used to decorate paths and add fragrance. This act was called “espadanar”.
Espadanedo possessed a unique autonomy. It even had its own courthouse in Saímes. The people nominated their own judge. The abbess of Tarouquela had to confirm the choice.
In 1758, Espadanedo comprised many places. These included Souto, Senhora da Graça and Casal Ferreiro. By the 20th century, more locations were noted. These were Barreiro, Barrela and Igreja. The rise in places shows a rise in population. Espadanedo peaked around 1950 with 1119 residents.
Espadanedo’s location is key to its story. It sits beside the Douro River. This location made it a vital point for roads. These roads connected to the Beira interior since the Middle Ages. Names like Pousada and Carreira reveal this history. They are signs of settlement and growth.
The parish’s patron saint is São Cristovão. He is linked to protection against sudden death. He also watches over good journeys. Locals likely chose him as a protector for those dependent on the Douro.
In 1758, the church had three altars. The main altar featured images of São Cristovão, São Pedro, Santo António and Santa Quitéria. Side altars were dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. Another was for Christ and São Sebastião. By 1733, a new church was mentioned. Manuel Pereira was buried inside it.
Craftsmen from Porto contributed to the church’s beauty. José da Mota Manso gilded the altarpiece in 1743. He also crafted the paneling of the chancel.
Espadanedo’s church was valuable. Its income reached 500,000 réis. The Monastery of Alpendurada once presented the church. They lost it to the Royal Patronage.
In 1758, there were three chapels. Two were private. One was public, dedicated to São Sebastião. The others belonged to local landowners.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, noble houses marked Espadanedo’s landscape. These included the Carreira, Espio, Souto and Vila estates.
One notable house, built in the late 18th or early 19th century, was the Recoutas. The Pinto and Correia family arms adorn it. It possibly documents the life of Raimundo Correia Pinto Tameirão. He was a military figure and politician.
In the 1890s, a chapel dedicated to Senhora de Lourdes was built in Saímes. This led to a unique procession. It featured giant arches similar to other northern festivals.
Interestingly, Espadanedo once had a bell foundry. José António de Leão owned it. This rare activity took place in the Almas area.
Today, Espadanedo continues to hold its stories. It is a place where history and culture intertwine. Its legacy remains.
