Dedicated to those in need, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist stands as a testament to Hamburg’s long history of compassion. This is more than just a building. It is a living chronicle of care that began almost 800 years ago.

The story of the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist starts in the 13th century. It was likely founded by Hamburg citizens. Envision a humble refuge for the poor, sick and elderly. Imagine weary pilgrims finding respite within its walls. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist offered them food and shelter.

Initially, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist was located near the Rödingsmarkt. Today, the Heiligengeistbrücke serves as a reminder of its original location. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist quickly grew. Soon, it acquired significant land. This included the Heiligengeistfeld. The field provided grain to feed the residents. Even entire villages like Barmbek and Eilbek belonged to the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist.

Over time, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist faced numerous changes. In 1529, the Franziskaner monks gave their Marien-Magdalenen-Kloster to the city. The monastery offered refuge to needy virgins and widows. The Oberalten took over the administration. Eventually, the monastery was merged with the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist.

In 1883, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist moved from the city center. It relocated to a new building on Richardstraße in Eilbek. Sadly, this building was destroyed during the Allied air raids in 1943. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist rose again. Construction began in Poppenbüttel in 1950. The institution expanded. In time, it merged with the Altendank Foundation.

Today, the Stiftung Hospital zum Heiligen Geist is Hamburg’s oldest foundation. It encompasses the Oberalten-Stift, Marien-Magdalenen-Kloster and Altendank. More than 1,000 people receive care here. The foundation provides home and short-term care. There is also assisted living. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist extends its services to people with dementia.

The Kollegium der Oberalten plays a vital role. They elect the administrative board of the foundation. Their history dates back to 1528. The Oberalten were responsible for the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist and the Marien-Magdalenen-Kloster.

As we stand here, remember the countless lives touched by the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. It embodies Hamburg’s spirit of charity. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist remains a beacon of hope. It offers a safe and dignified life for those in need.
