Imagine trumpets and horns echoing across the Main River. It once signaled more than just music. Welcome to the Old St. Nicholas Church.

This medieval Lutheran temple has a story far beyond its stones. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. He is the patron saint of fishermen. They once thrived on the nearby Main River.

The Old St. Nicholas Church’s story began in the mid-12th century. A chapel was built on this very site. By the mid-15th century, the current building stood. It replaced the original chapel. The foundations of that original structure are marked on the floor. These markings show its original dimensions.

But the real turning point? The Reformation. In 1543, the church was closed. Its altars were demolished. For 150 years, it became an archive. It even served as a warehouse during trade fairs. Imagine the holy space filled with goods.

However, a trumpeter watchman lived in the steeple. He announced the arrival of boats. The watchman also sounded the alarm if fires broke out.

Skipping ahead to 1838, the Old St. Nicholas Church was renovated. A northern portal was opened. It faced Saturday Mountain. The roof was renewed.

Then in 1903, a damaged cast-iron spire was torn down. A year later, it was replaced. The copper roof still exists today.

During World War II, Frankfurt was bombed. The Old St. Nicholas Church was spared. It was one of the few historical buildings to survive. The 19th-century organ was not so lucky. It was walled in. It became unusable due to the war. The reasons why are not quite known. Reconstruction began in 1947. It finished by the end of 1948.

Today, the Old St. Nicholas Church has a double-aisle hall. It boasts a high Gothic choir. Fifty-one bells ring from its tower. Four bells are used for peals. Forty-seven create carillons. The acoustics are great. Organ concerts occur regularly. Handbells, trumpets, choirs, and brass bands perform here. A spiral stairway leads to a gallery. It offers spectacular views of Romerberg Plaza.

And did you know? The Old St. Nicholas Church congregation is part of today’s Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau. It includes Lutheran, Reformed, and United Protestant congregations.

So, as you stand here, remember the Old St. Nicholas Church’s resilience. It has transformed from a chapel to a warehouse. It became a place of music and worship. It is a symbol of Frankfurt’s enduring spirit.
