The towering brick walls of Modern Mills stand silent, yet their very presence speaks volumes of a bygone era. Modern Mills was a textile giant, once bustling with life and a vital part of Mumbai’s industrial landscape. The mill was founded by a British gentleman, Mr. Gordon, in the 19th century, and named “The Gordon Mills.” The mill survived the harsh tax structures of the British Empire thanks to its devoted owners, employees, and shareholders. The mill was later officially incorporated into the Indian Companies Act on 24th October 1933 as “Modern Mills Ltd. and became one of the most reputed textile mills in India. With the mill workers strike in the 1990s, the company went into a deep financial depression and was forced to shut down. Production was restarted in the early 1990s, but high labor, electricity, and water costs, along with heavier tax structures, led to the final closure of the manufacturing unit in 2004. Over the years, Modern Mills has been undergoing transformations, adapting to the changing needs of Mumbai. Today, the old mill site is now a real estate development project, a testament to both the resilience of India’s economic landscape and the ongoing evolution of Mumbai’s skyline. From the heart of the textile industry to a modern urban development project, Modern Mills echoes the changing tides of time, its legacy woven into the fabric of Mumbai’s history.
