Gazing up, you’ll notice the iconic Blue Tower. It stands as a testament to Brussels’ architectural evolution. This postmodernist tower has been a landmark since its inauguration in 1976.

The Blue Tower, formerly known as the SAIFI Tower, was designed by Henri Montois. His functionalist design fit into the 1970s plan for Avenue Louise. This plan envisioned five office buildings. The Blue Tower joined the IT Tower and the Louise Tower as prominent structures along this avenue.

For almost 50 years, the Blue Tower has dominated the area. It stands 88 meters tall with 25 floors. You can see it near the Ixelles ponds and the Bois de La Cambre abbey.

Now, picture this: the Blue Tower is undergoing a significant renovation. This transformation aims to revitalize the tower. It will become a mixed-use complex with offices and shops. It will also feature a 360-degree panoramic rooftop.

Pascal Smet, Brussels State Secretary for Urbanism and Heritage, announced the renovation. The project seeks to integrate the Blue Tower better into the urban landscape. It aims to open the tower up to the neighborhood.

The renovation includes several key interventions. A sky bar and spacious terrace will crown the building. This will offer a 360-degree panorama of Brussels. Three additional floors with offices will be added. The main building profile will consist of a ground floor plus 28 storeys. It will also include technical facilities for a total height of 106.75 meters.

A new corner building with shops and offices is also planned. It will be open and bright. The building will have greenery. It will be turned towards the neighborhood. The street’s slope will allow for a shop with a gross area of 1,441 square meters.

The renovation respects the existing facade’s pattern. The office floors will have a soft blue tint. This will ensure consistency with the existing facade. Aluminium panels in a gold bronze color will adorn the core facades. They will reflect light and give the cladding a shimmering golden crown.

The project incorporates plants and promotes soft mobility. A green roof with water retention will be created. New vegetation will adorn the esplanade and patios. Bicycle parking spaces will increase from 20 to 141.

Ans Persoons, alderwoman for Urbanism for the city of Brussels, said the rooftop will allow all Brusselers to enjoy the view.

So, the Blue Tower is not just a building. It’s a symbol of Brussels’ architectural ambition. It is evolving to meet the needs of the 21st century. This renovation ensures the Blue Tower remains an integral part of Brussels’ skyline. It will continue to offer a unique perspective on this dynamic city. The Blue Tower stands ready for the future.
