A majestic structure. That’s the first thought that comes to mind when you see the Catedral de San Pedro. Right before you stands Cali’s mother church. Its history is rich and captivating a testament to faith and resilience.

The Catedral de San Pedro wasn’t built overnight. Its construction began in 1772. Architect Antonio Garcia designed it in the Baroque style. Parish priest Jose Rivera laid the first stone on September 1st that year. Local prisoners provided the labor. Political turmoil delayed completion. The church wasn’t finished until 1841. By then the style had shifted to neoclassical lines.

The cathedral stands as a National Monument of Colombia a title it received on March 12 1982. Its architectural significance is undeniable. It’s also considered Architectural Heritage of Cali. It has survived earthquakes. The facade you see today is from 1930 a result of restoration work after significant damage.

Look closely. Inside you’ll find treasures. Valuable paintings from the Quito school adorn the walls. The central altar is magnificent. Images like the Fallen Christ and the Tabernacle of the Most High dating back to the 18th century are simply breathtaking.

The massive bronze doors imported from Europe in the 1960s are a sight to behold. Don’t miss the Walcker organ. This impressive instrument was also brought from Europe. It’s one of the largest tubular organs in the country. German engineer Oscar Binder installed it in 1928. It underwent a major restoration in 2010. Colombian Juan Carlos Angel Gallo led that restoration.

Beneath the central altar lie the remains of Joaquin De Caicedo y Cuero a significant figure in Cali’s past. The impressive crystal rock lamps illuminate the interior. They add to the cathedral’s splendor. The Catedral de San Pedro isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Cali.
