From high in the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Río Guadalix begins its journey. It tumbles down the slopes, carving a path through the heart of Madrid. The Río Guadalix is more than just a river. It’s a lifeline, a historical thread, and a source of captivating stories. The Guadalix River flows southeast for 42 kilometers, eventually joining the Jarama River near the Santo Domingo housing development in Algete. This is close to the Jarama Circuit, a popular racetrack. The river’s name, Río Guadalix, has Arabic roots. “Wadi” means “river” and “alix” might be a person’s name or a pre-Arabic term. Either way, the name echoes the region’s rich, layered past. One of the key features of the Río Guadalix is the El Vellón Reservoir. This reservoir, also known as Pedrezuela Reservoir, plays a vital role in the water supply for Madrid. It spans a vast 393 hectares and holds a whopping 41 cubic hectometers of water. Imagine the scale of this watery giant, nestled between Guadalix de la Sierra and Pedrezuela. The reservoir isn’t just a modern marvel. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of those who sought to harness the river’s power for the benefit of the city. Historically, the Río Guadalix played a crucial role in supplying water to Madrid. Back in 1859, when the El Pontón de la Oliva reservoir faced leakage issues, the Guadalix stepped in. A small, 3-kilometer canal was quickly constructed, diverting 110 liters per second to bolster Madrid’s water supply. Later, in 1906, further works enhanced the river’s contribution. The El Mesto dam and a new Guadalix Canal were built, primarily to provide backup when the Lozoya River’s waters became murky or scarce. These historical interventions highlight the importance of the Río Guadalix, a constant source even when other systems faltered. Today, the river continues to nourish the land and provide recreational opportunities. It’s a place where people can connect with nature, enjoying the tranquility of its waters and the beauty of its surroundings. So, the next time you see the Río Guadalix, remember its journey. From the high mountains to the bustling city, it has shaped the landscape and the lives of the people who call this region home.
