A bullet hole. That’s what first catches your eye inside Saint George’s Episcopal Church. It’s small almost insignificant. Yet it speaks volumes.

Welcome to Saint George’s a stunning example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Located on East 16th Street this church has stood proudly since 1856. It’s more than just a beautiful building though. Saint George’s holds centuries of history within its walls.

The original Saint George’s was a much smaller chapel built in 1752. It served Trinity Church parishioners living on the city’s east side. That building was eventually replaced by the magnificent structure we see today. The exterior was designed by Charles Otto Blesch. Leopold Eidlitz designed the interior. Their work showcases a style influenced by German hall churches. Unfortunately a devastating fire gutted the church in 1865. Eidlitz oversaw its meticulous reconstruction.

The rebuilt Saint George’s reflects the era’s social changes. It served as a beacon for immigrants in a rapidly changing neighborhood. The church became known as “Morgan’s Church” due to J P Morgan’s significant involvement. He was a devoted parishioner and a generous benefactor. He even helped fund social programs for the community. This included everything from industrial schools to soup kitchens. Rev William Stephen Rainsford’s socially conscious ministry played a vital role in this transformation.

Then came April 18 1920. A man named Thomas W Simpkin entered the church. He intended to shoot J P Morgan. Morgan was already deceased. Simpkin shot Dr James Markoe instead. That bullet hole you saw is a grim reminder of this tragic event. The bullet remains lodged in the wall a silent witness to the past.

Harry Thacker Burleigh another notable congregant is also a significant part of Saint George’s history. This African-American composer and singer served in the church choir for 50 years. His contributions helped bridge cultural divides.

Saint George’s Episcopal Church stands as a testament to faith community resilience and change. It’s a place where history unfolds both gracefully and tragically. It’s a story told not only in its architecture but also in the scars it bears. The bullet hole is a reminder that even in a house of God life’s drama can unfold. This place has witnessed both immense generosity and shocking violence. It truly is a building that embodies New York City’s complex past.
