In 1934 a new chapter began for Williamsburg Christian Church. The congregation a member of the Disciples of Christ denomination acquired a building. This building was erected in 1885 for the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. Williamsburg Christian Church found a home. It was a significant moment in the church’s history. This beautiful structure served as its sanctuary for many years. The church flourished within those walls. It became a center of faith and community in Williamsburg.

The church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a vibrant hub of activity. It housed a remarkable pipe organ. This magnificent instrument was crafted by Johnson & Son in 1885. It boasted two manuals 25 stops and 27 ranks. The organ was a testament to the craftsmanship of its time. Its rich tones filled the church during services. It provided a powerful accompaniment to hymns and worship songs. For decades it played a central role in the church’s musical life.

However time marched on. The church’s musical preferences changed. By 1990 contemporary music became the focus. The century-old organ fell into disuse. Years of neglect took their toll. It became unplayable. Many mechanical parts were broken. Despite its deteriorated state the organ remained structurally sound. It was a poignant reminder of a bygone era.

In 2001 the church faced another significant transition. The congregation sold its beloved building. Developers purchased the property. The building was slated for demolition. This presented a heartbreaking prospect for the church. But it also spurred action to save the beloved pipe organ. The Organ Clearing House an organization dedicated to preserving historic instruments stepped in. They rescued the organ from destruction. It was moved to storage. The hope is that someday someone will restore this piece of history. The organ stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and the enduring legacy of Williamsburg Christian Church. It waits for a chance to once again fill a space with its glorious music. The story of Williamsburg Christian Church is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of faith and community. Its enduring legacy is a source of pride and inspiration.
