Founded in 1945 Newman School stands proudly in Boston’s Back Bay. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place where history and ambition meet. Newman’s story began as Newman Preparatory School. It was founded by Dr J Harry Lynch and a group of Catholic laymen. Their aim was to help World War II veterans get a college education.
Over time Newman Prep transformed. It became co-educational. It started accepting younger students. By the 1960s it even ran a separate school for boys. Walter J Egan headed this school for many years. Today’s Newman School offers a liberal arts education. Around 200 students attend from Boston and around the world.
The school embraces diversity. Students come from Australia Brazil China and many more countries. Half of the students are from Boston itself. Dormitories are located just a short walk away providing convenient housing for students.
Newman’s academic foundation is the International Baccalaureate program. Students can take advantage of this in their junior and senior years. The school also offers the IB Middle Years Programme and the IB Diploma Programme. This program has seen over 100 Newman students earn the IB Diploma.
The school isn’t just about books and exams. Newman competes in the Massachusetts Bay Independent League. It has long-standing rivalries with Commonwealth School and Boston University Academy. Students participate in various sports like sailing tennis and basketball. They even have a sailing team that uses the Charles River. The tennis team uses courts at the Winchester Tennis Club.
