Built in 1952, 第一教学楼, or “First Teaching Building,” stands as a testament to Peking University’s enduring spirit. It’s one of the oldest teaching buildings on campus, nestled near the Second Teaching Building in the northwest corner of the west gate. Imagine the flurry of activity as Peking University relocated from its former home at the Red Building in Shajing to the Yenching University campus, now known as Weiyuan. This move in the 1950s marked a period of expansion, and 第一教学楼 arose amidst this transformation. Designed by Li Daozeng, a prominent architect from the Peking University Architecture Institute, 第一教学楼 reflects the architectural style known as “Classical Revival.” This design philosophy maintains a sense of continuity with the historical aesthetic of Yenching University’s architecture. The building boasts a large roof, gray-blue brick walls, and simple decorative elements. Inside, you would have found large tiered classrooms at either end, perfect for lectures, and several smaller classrooms for more intimate learning sessions. In 1978, 第一教学楼 embraced modernity. It became home to an “Electronic Education Center,” utilizing cutting-edge technology for teaching activities. This center also served as the broadcasting hub for the campus’s closed-circuit television network for many years. Today, 第一教学楼 continues its legacy as a place of learning. Its historic significance was officially recognized in 2019 when the Beijing municipal government designated it as a historical building. It stands as a reminder of Peking University’s journey through time, a tangible link to its past and a symbol of its dedication to education.
