Leaping into the void. That’s what Robbie Maddison did at the Bike Jump, right here in Las Vegas. This incredible feat happened on New Year’s Eve 2008. It was part of Red Bull’s “New Year, No Limits” show. Maddison didn’t just jump any gap. He launched his motorcycle up onto a replica of the Arc de Triomphe, perched atop the Paris Las Vegas casino. The Bike Jump wasn’t a simple hop. Maddison soared 96 feet into the air to reach the top of the replica. He then rolled around a bit before taking another plunge. This time, he free-fell off the ledge back down to a landing ramp. The whole stunt was a recreation of a practice jump Maddison performed at Wyvern Ranch in Piru, California. There, Red Bull had constructed a scaffolding version of the Arc de Triomphe. Maddison practiced the jump repeatedly, fine-tuning his approach speed and trajectory. The Vegas jump, however, didn’t go quite as smoothly as the practice runs. Maddison overshot the landing and nearly crashed. The impact sliced open his hand. But ever the daredevil, he walked away relatively unscathed. This Bike Jump became a legendary moment in freestyle motocross history. It cemented Robbie Maddison’s reputation as a modern-day Evel Knievel.
